Hi and Welcome

So…. You are pregnant. Well, first of all congratulations.

I bet you have many questions and perhaps even a few concerns.

Now, if this site doesn’t help you in answering them, check out the “useful websites” page, that might do the trick.

There’s one thing though, I want you to come away with and that is the belief that you can do this. The majority of women are perfectly designed to have babies, creation made sure of that. Humanity didn’t survive for millions of years by chance. Trust yourself and trust your intuition and inner wisdom. Make sure you only listen to positive people and stories.

Unfortunately, in today’s society we have lost the belief that pregnancy and birth can be easy, natural and fulfulling.  We could write a book about the why’s but let’s just look at a few reasons in point form.

  • Less women in modern society are personally surrounded by expecting women and witness birth
  • Busy women have less time and inclination to study and research birth for themselves. Lack of knowledge leads to fear.
  • The media dramatizes pregnancy and birth and depicts powerlessness
  • Many women hear “horror stories” from people in their community
  • Medical management is problem-based and therefore implies a distrust of a natural pregnancy and birth. This may make women feel that if they do trust their own bodies, they must be in lala land, because their beliefs do not fit the contemporary standard.
  • Many women birth in hospitals, where unfortunately the very activities that are intended to safe-guard birth can have a counter-productive effect in promoting fear and tension, reducing the flow of hormones, and triggering mistrust of one’s own birthing ability.
  • Women who have experienced an empowered pregnancy and birth in, or out, of hospitals tend to be in a minority and their stories may be regarded with some doubt….or they are seen as the ‘lucky ones’ however, 95% of  women could have this experience.
  • Basically, fear, tension and mistrust surrounding pregnancy and birth, and consequently the need for medical intervention, is our cultural norm.

Basically, women are exposed to a set of expectation about childbirth that originates in information they have gathered throughout their lives. The media, shared experiences and stories, books etc all provide a perception of what childbirth will be like.  Nearly all depictions of modern childbirth are preoccupied with pain and problems and therefore much of the information provided to women, is about pain relief and problem solving options.  This implies that the experience will be painful and full of challenges and sets a women’s belief system up to be prepared for this.  In turn these expectations instigate fear and apprehension as many women approach childbirth.

It is every women's right to have control over her own pregnancy and give birth as gently and naturally as possible. It is time that women return to their own instincts and have their babies as nature intended them to do.
