What is HypnoBirthing®
Unlike other childbirth methods that teach you how to cope with and manage pain, HypnoBirthing is based on the principle that childbirth does not necessarily need to be painful provided the mother is properly prepared and relaxed. Labour pain is largely caused as a result of the involuntary "fight and flight" response which is triggered by fear. A mother who labours without fear and excessive anxiety allows the birth hormones to flow freely. Read all about the birth hormones in my article The role of the brain in birthing. While trained in HypnoBirthing, most mothers-to-be are able to change their expectations of a long, painful and unpleasant labour and replace those expectations with an I can do it attitude. Rather than exhausting, shallow breathing, HypnoBirthing mothers learn deep abdominal breathing and total relaxation and calmness, allowing her to work harmoniously with her body and baby. This in turn enables her to achieve a more comfortable and easier birth.
HypnoBirthing® is the brainchild of Marie F. Mongan and has been introduced in the late eighties in the USA and in 2001 it made its’ way to Australia. It is based on the studies and works of English obstetrician, Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, who by many is concidered to be the father of natural childbirth.
The program teaches women how to utilise and control the body’s natural hormones, which can greatly reduce the need for drugs and interventions. The breathing techniques, visualisations and imageries taught, help contractions to work more effectively and therefore shorten the birthing process.
HypnoBirthing® restores the belief that birthing can be a beautiful, peaceful experience and it also creates a more integral role for the birthing companion.
